What made you want to go into your field?
I have always wanted to be a small business owner and be my own boss. I learned at an early age that I didn't like receiving orders. I chose the moving industry because I felt that I could fill a void in Santa Barbara, that is giving the customer a friendly, timely, and professional move for an affordable rate.
What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy being part of every customers experience with moving into a new place or buying that first house, getting that dream apartment or moving into that office with a great view. It is exciting for me to share the joy of moving with every client. I also like to be able to structure my own schedule which gives me free time to enjoy all that the beautiful town of Santa Barbara has to offer.
What challenges do you face on a daily basis?
I face many different challenges everyday. One phone call can change my whole day, week, or even month. I recieve many calls from customers in binds who need help immediately, and as you know, that can be a very difficult task. My company is small. We have 4 full time employees and three part time employees, which makes our schedules a bit hectic at times. In Santa Barbara, there are around 30 different moving companies so coming up with marketing ideas and what seprates my company can be a struggle.
What characteristics does someone need to be a successful in your field?
A small business owner has to be many things to be successful. I believe that first and foremost you must be professional. The clientle in Santa Barabara are all educated and demanding people of the service industry. You must also be a very organized and on time person who can multi task at the sound of a phone call. The moving business is very competetive so you must stay persistent at all times, because there are many other companies that are ready to help your clients.
